Our Vision

A world that is resilient to earthquakes

  • To become the worlds official, most complete source of earthquake risk resources; and hence a globally accepted standard for risk assessment
  • To ensure that GEM products find application in earthquake risk management worldwide

Our Work

GEM’s collaborative efforts are building a heightened public understanding and awareness of seismic risk, leading to increased earthquake resilience worldwide, as we support the GEM community in:

  • sharing of data, models, and knowledge through the OpenQuake platform and international meetings
  • collaborating and integrating information from global to local
  • applying GEM tools and software to inform decision-making for risk mitigation and management
  • expanding the science and understanding of earthquakes

Our Values

Four guiding principles define what GEM is, how we work and what we envisage for the GEM community:

GEM's pillars

Trust is critical for any source of information used for public good. By engaging and collaborating with the scientific community, GEM has earned a degree of credibility that has been strengthened by the alliance of the public and private sectors. Assessing earthquake risk holistically requires multidisciplinary knowledge and the latest technology. GEM brings together this diverse scientific community with a common language, whilst keeping discussion and debate alive.

GEM was founded to bridge gaps –from science to practice, and from knowledge to action. Information is an essential precursor to risk reduction and risk mitigation, but only if it is available to all stakeholders and that is what we strive for. Through a wide range of partnerships in public and private sectors, we also benefit a broad range of stakeholders, bringing a once-scarce resource to all sectors and beneficiaries. By making risk assessment inclusive, despite its complexity, we collaboratively create a culture of awareness and resilience.

The OpenQuake Platform features open datasets, allows users to explore different types of risk information, facilitates data contribution through innovative apps and tools, and supports open sharing of information through maps and layers. The OpenQuake Engine is an open and transparent science-based risk modeling software in which users can combine GEM data and models with their own, and explicitly account for uncertainty. Source code of the software is publicly accessible and can be used and even extended by GEM stakeholders. Transparency is essential not only to our products, but also our processes and information sharing. GEM resources include global best practice for all methods and approaches. Community feedback and open debate are the drivers of continuous improvement.

GEM is about people that are passionate about risk assessment and mitigation. Only by working together across sectors, geographies, and disciplines can we compare and advance risk analysis and enhance resilience worldwide. Academia links up with decision makers, the private sector and international organisations within GEM’s public-private partnership. GEM products are the result of global collaboration, and it is through partnerships, projects and programmes across the globe that they will continuously be enhanced. By providing a common understanding of risk, GEM becomes the critical link in creating successful resilient partnerships between policy makers, the private sector, and scientists.
