EERI joins GEM

EERI, the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute, was officially (and heartily) welcomed as the 10th GEM Associate Participant, during the last GEM Governing Board meeting.
EERI has a long-standing relationship with GEM, and has already been contributing to several GEM components such as the Physical Vulnerability, the Building Taxonomy, and the Socio-Economic Vulnerability and Resilience.

“The partnership with EERI is an asset for GEM and its global community”, said Rui Pinho, GEM Secretary-General, “EERI, with its international membership, has been supporting GEM outreach and knowledge exchange initiatives in many occasions, such as the Expert Elicitation workshops conducted in Lisbon (September 2012) and Oakland (May2013), and the evaluation and testing for the taxonomy component, a priceless contribution ”.

Jay Berger, EERI Executive Director, is keen on exploring how the two organizations can create further synergies in next GEM 20014-2018 Working Programme, “ We are looking at how EERI can facilitate the use of GEM knowledge and tools, and contribute to strengthening earthquake resilience around the world” said Jay, “The EERI community, including its student and regional chapters, are already considering future initiatives for 2014, putting proposals on the table, such as possible scenario exercises, or pilot cases for GEM products.

The endorsement and trust GEM receives from an increasing number of partners and stakeholders, is just one of the way GEM success can be measured. The more partners join GEM and share its mission, the stronger the impact of the knowledge and tools GEM is developing will be.
